Why Learn Arabic?
Learning a new language is not only beneficial to be able to communicate to others (around 500 million Arabic speakers worldwide!) but is a gateway to properly understanding the Quran and Islamic scriptures as translations only go so far due to Arabic being a rich language with over a million distinct words (compared to around 120,000 in English), often giving words precise or descriptive meaning that’s lacking in many languages, a problem translators of the Quran often cite as an immense challenge in transmitting accurately the meaning of the Quran.
Many people are usually unaware that a large number of words originate from Arabic. And often found in Latin, Spanish, Greek, German before finding their way into English. As a result, some people consider Arabic to be the “mother of all languages”. More on this here.
Arabic has numerous synonyms and nuances that allow for subtle shades of meaning, for example the numerous words for “friend” in Arabic describing the varying levels of companionship (see in the image below). In addition to other examples such as the diversity of words for love and so on, each encompassing a precise description that’s lacking in most if not all languages in the world. This precision is reflected in the Quran, where words and phrases are chosen with utmost care to convey the intended message accurately.
The beauty and eloquence of the Arabic Quran can be seen in countless examples throughout its verses. For instance, the opening chapter, Surah Al-Fatiha, is just seven verses long, yet it encapsulates the essence of the entire Quran. Its rhythm, rhyme, and profound meanings make it a masterpiece of Arabic literature.
