Tahajjud, also known as Qiyam-ul-Layl or the Night Prayer, is a voluntary prayer offered at night after waking from sleep. It isn't mandatory, but it is widely considered the most virtuous of the voluntary prayers and a cherished Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad.

When can you pray Tahajjud?

Tahajjud can be offered any time during the night after completing the obligatory Isha prayer, up until the break of dawn (Fajr). It's customary to sleep first and wake up during the night to perform it, and the last third of the night before Fajr is considered the most blessed time.

How do you calculate the last third of the night?

Divide the total time between Maghrib (sunset) and Fajr (dawn) into three equal parts. The final block of time before Fajr is the last third of the night.

How To Pray Tahajjud (Night Prayer)

Tahajjud is a voluntary night prayer, prayed after waking from sleep, ideally in the last third of the night before Fajr. After a fresh wudu, pray sets of 2 Rak'ahs, as many as you like, then make personal dua, and close with Witr as your final prayer before Fajr.
