Muhammad's Relationship with Aisha

A Love Story of Compassion and Devotion

The relationship between Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) is one of the most profound examples of love, care, and mutual respect in history. Their bond was not only a model of marital affection but also an example to the beauty of Islam, which places immense value on kindness, companionship, and understanding within marriage.
The Prophet (pbuh) said:“The best of you are the best to their women, and I am the best to my women.”(Sunan Ibn Majah 1977, Tirmidhi 3895)

A Relationship Built on Love and Playfulness

One of the most remarkable aspects of Prophet Muhammad’s (pbuh) relationship with Aisha (ra) was the playfulness and joy they shared. The Prophet would race with Aisha, laugh with her, and engage in lighthearted conversations. A famous narration from Aisha states:
“I raced with the Prophet and beat him, but when I gained weight, he raced with me again and won, then said, ‘This is for that.’” (Sunan Abi Dawood 2578)
This shows the Prophet’s sense of humour and the warmth he brought into his home. It highlights how he treated his wife with gentleness and affection, setting an example for all Muslim husbands to follow.
The Prophet (pbuh) said:“Treat women well, for they were created from a rib, and the most curved part of the rib is its upper part. If you try to straighten it, you will break it, but if you leave it as it is, it will remain curved. So, treat women kindly.”(Sahih al-Bukhari 5186, Sahih Muslim 1468)

The Night the Army Stopped for Aisha’s Lost Necklace

One of the most touching incidents that exemplifies the Prophet’s love and concern for Aisha is the time he stopped an entire army for her. While traveling, Aisha lost her necklace, and when the Prophet realised her distress, he halted the whole caravan to search for it. This act of immense care led to a beautiful outcome — the revelation of the Tayammum (dry ablution) ruling, which made purification easier for Muslims when water is scarce (Sahih al-Bukhari 334).

This story is not just about a lost necklace but about how the Prophet valued Aisha’s emotions and comfort, prioritising her happiness over the army’s movement.
The Prophet (pbuh) said:“The most perfect believers in faith are those who have the best character, and the best of you are those who are best to their women.”(Sunan At-Tirmidhi 1162)

His Endless Patience and Support During Hardships

The Prophet (pbuh) was not only affectionate during happy moments but also stood by Aisha during difficult times. When she was falsely accused in the incident of Ifk (the slander), he patiently endured the ordeal, trusting in Allah and waiting for divine guidance. Eventually, Allah Himself cleared Aisha’s name through a revelation:

“Indeed, those who came with falsehood are a group among you… Allah will bring you to account, for He is All-Knowing, All-Wise.” (Qur’an 24:11)

The way Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) handled this situation reflects his wisdom, unwavering faith, and deep love for Aisha. He never acted out of anger but relied on patience, setting an example for all to follow. Remarkably this situation also highlights the truthfulness of his message as he awaited patiently for Allah’s revelation rather than following his desires and wishes.

The Prophet’s Final Moments: Aisha’s Embrace

Perhaps the most heartwarming testament to their love is that the Prophet (pbuh) chose to spend his final moments in Aisha’s arms. As he lay in his last illness, he rested his head on her chest, and his final breath was taken while being close to her (Sahih al-Bukhari 1389).

This moment signifies the deep emotional connection they shared. Even in his last moments, he found comfort in her presence, signifying their love and companionship.
“And among His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquility in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy.” (Qur’an 30:21)
